Educational activities at IFOM are managed and coordinated by SEMM, the European School of Molecular Medicine, co-founded by IFOM and hosted at the IFOM-IEO Campus.

SEMM offers advanced education, of international standing, in emerging sectors of biomedicine, such as genomics, molecular medicine and nanotechnology, through PhD and Postdoctoral programs, international scientific events and scientific seminars. The educational model adopted by SEMM involves intensive laboratory activity flanked by a program of advanced, interdisciplinary courses.

In 2007, SEMM, together with the University of Milan, inaugurated a new PhD course as part of its Advanced Educational Program. The "Foundations of the life sciences and their ethical consequences" is the first PhD program within Europe to combine Scientific Research with Philosophy.
The aim of this PhD course is to provide a new generation of international scientists with the competence to tackle key scientific issues, including any epistemological and ethical aspects, using interdisciplinary methodologies and skills.
