IFOM, Research Programs

The research programs running at IFOM are focused on basic and applied molecular oncology. Scientists at IFOM study the fundamental biological mechanisms involving DNA and proteins that are responsible for the development of cancer. Their aim is to identify “key” processes that can be disrupted or stimulated by therapeutic intervention. The scientists and Principal Investigators working at IFOM are selected according to rigorous international evaluation criteria.
The 19 research programs at IFOM cover a wide range of topics including the molecular genetics of cancer, tumor angiogenesis, the genetics of metastasis, mechanisms of cellular aging, intracellular signal transduction, proteomics, and cellular and ultrastructural oncology.
These research programs are relevant both to basic research and to translational/applied research. Their final goal is to produce results that can be rapidly translated into diagnostic and therapeutic tools.
Although the majority of the research programs are being conducted at IFOM in Milan, some programs are based at external institutions, including the University of Genoa and the Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (IRCC) of Candiolo (Turin).
